When you hear that an ERP is built on the "Frappe framework," it refers to an open-source, full-stack development toolkit written in Python and JavaScript, the same one that powers the well-known ERPNext. The core idea is that you do not code every screen from scratch; instead you describe your data once in what is called a DocType (document type), and the framework generates the tables, forms, and reports automatically.

This metadata-driven approach speeds up building database-backed applications. Rather than writing code to create a customer table and its fields, you define the fields in one place, and the framework handles the rest. The framework also auto-generates a REST API for every DocType, which makes later integration with other systems easier.

The default database in Frappe is MariaDB, an open-source relational system close to MySQL. This matters because double-entry accounting and journal entries need strict consistency that other database types do not always guarantee. The framework also ships with ready-made user, role, and permission management, plus a no-code report builder.

For a business user, you do not need to know these details to use the system. But understanding them helps when choosing a provider or judging future scalability.
